The first church to officially support us as missionaries is none other than the small church of Primera Iglesia in Frisco, TX. This past weekend we got to participate in their Sunday service and give them a presentation of the ministry on Eleuthera along with our involvement and how they too can contribute.
If you thinking that this sounds like a Hispanic church you would be correct. Furthermore, if you’re also thinking, “Ryan, I didn’t know you could speak Spanish” you would be questioning correctly. On our Sunday visit I was asked to deliver their morning message. Now, I know enough Spanish to get by with “How much does this cost,” “Where is the bathroom,” and little more to place me at the linguistical equivalent of a 2 year old. However, I was blessed to preach through a translator (Carlos), whom I’m confident knows much more than I do about Spanish and Preaching.
The congregation was so friendly and personable. We were instantly struck at how similar this church is with the setting of some of the small churches on Eleuthera. They spent the first part of their Sunday morning in Bible Study with a teacher operating in a Q/A format. Their humble devotion to God’s Word and discipleship was truly refreshing to see.
It was a wonderful visit and additionally humbling to see such a small church give so generously to missionaries they barely know. Emily and I are truly blessed to recognize them as our first church to partner with us – thus they are truly our Primera Iglesia!
