What a blessing it is to have friends to celebrate and give thanks with! We are also blessed to have been given a turkey and trimmings from our ministry partners: Agape Flights. With more food than we could possibly eat ourselves, we invited some of our closest friends over for a Thanksgiving feast.
In the Bahamas, Thanksgiving is a largely under-celebrated holiday (and rightfully so), but Bahamians still know how to eat!
This holiday in the US is filled with family and food and football. Then after dinner everyone naps and then the men all go out hunting. A fall chill is in the air and the excitement of the holiday season and school break make Thanksgiving very festive.
However, in the Bahamas, we don’t have the cold chill of fall, and we don’t have our family, and we don’t have that break off of school – not to mention there are no deer here to shoot! But with the Packers going 11-0… and come on… how is it that I haven’t done an article celebrating my TEAM – GO PACKERS!!! (now that I’ve got that off my chest)… once everyone started to show up for the meal, it began to feel like the holiday season again.
Emily had her girls over cooking all day long – and I do mean all day long. They were such a big help and Emily had so much fun with them. Micah was running about and getting into trouble too, but occasionally he helped to sir the ingredients or mix up the batter; he had a fun time.
One of the best things about Thanksgiving in general is the leftovers. Even as I write this I’m enjoying some day old Apple Pie! Even with as much as we could eat, we still had plenty of leftovers to pass along and everyone home with something.
After dinner we cleared the table and played some games. A few years ago my sister taught us this fun paper game where you alternate writing sentence and drawing pictures of those sentences – it is side-splitting hilarious. We also played charades, and it was the first time some people had ever played! All in all we had some great laughs and a wonderful time. However, perhaps the funniest thing all night long was Emily and Michelle fighting over breaking the “wishbone” and neither one of them able to snap it – even with all their might!
Most of all we are thankful to our loving God, who showers his love on us and provides for all our needs both in our home and ministry. As we remember all those many blessings, it is our friends and family and our church families that support us that are right at the top of our list. May you be richly blessed with friends and an abundance to give thanks for, and may the joy of knowing you are seated with Christ be your greatest gift this Thanksgiving season.
