Valentines Weekend Camping at the Lighthouse

We just had the best time! Although this isn’t officially Micah’s first time camping, it’ll be the 1st that he’ll probably remember. We finally got a little time off and so we took the time and decided to go on a family camping trip. Now for all those “real” campers out there, don’t judge us, because we skimped on an actual tent and instead just took the back seats out of our minivan as a tent-substitute.

One of the best locations on Eleuthera to get away is at lighthouse beach at the very southern tip of the island. However, I’d say that about 50% of the times we’ve visited we’ve always run into other people either camping or hiking, and this being Valentine’s weekend, I thought for sure we’d have company for our peace and quiet. But no one was around! It was just the most peaceful.

In order to even get to the beach you have to drive down this terrible road, filled with rocks and potholes. But once you’re there the scenery opens up and you’ll find palms trees and the water currents mixing around the southern tip of the island.

We arrived just shortly before sundown, so right away we were busy gathering up wood for our fire/stove. I was amazed that someone had been at the beach not too long before us, because the campfire area was still warm. I even found a hot coal with which I started our fire – didn’t even need matches (which made me think of our favorite cable TV show, “Man, Woman, Wild,” on Discovery… check out our homage parody below… we had some fun!).

Micah went crazy over marshmallows and he did his best to roast a hotdog, but in all the excitement he ended up knocking over more than he set up. It was a good thing we brought Tag along too. Not only does he clean up the floor after spills at the house, but what do you know, he cleans up the outdoors too!

Sleeping in the van was great. It was plenty big enough to fit two adults, and we stuck Micah in-between the two front seats. He loved it and called it his “hole.” Once we turned out the lantern and tried to go to sleep, we’d say, “Micah, get back in your hole.” He’d reply – “I am in my hole!” It was pretty cute.

The temperature was great, there were no bugs, you could hear the water lapping on the shore just a few feet away all night long! What a great mini-vacation, we just had the best time. The next morning we went on little adventures with Micah, and he had so much fun too. What a great reminder to take time and enjoy the world as a family!
