Field Trips – by Emily

The last few weeks have been especially fun teaching the 5th and 6th grades! We have had the opportunity to go on two field trips; one to the Eleuthera Agricultural Fair, and another to the Leon Levy Plant Reserve.

I love attending the Agricultural Fair! They fill Bay Front Park in Governors Harbor with booths or native fruits and veggies, crafts, and animals. We walked around with the kids and asked lots of questions and checked out things. I love learning about the natural things that Eleuthera has to offer. There are many things like purses, jewelry, mats, baskets, brooms, and much more that can be made from the trees, coconuts, beans, shells, and other natural things. I have enjoyed making jewelry from shells and sea beans, and I am joining the South Eleuthera Craft Association, which I’m really excited about!

There are so many things want to learn how to do! In Eleuthera there is a lot of “bush”, and from the different bushes and trees you can get a lot of bush medicine. I loved learning more about natural medicines you can get right in your back yard! They had lots of fruits and veggies too. A favorite of ours is sugar cane! I brought some home and Ryan, Micah, and I had fun eating it. Micah called it candy!

I also got to try cassava for the first time, which is a root that has a similar texture and taste as potatoes, but you can also eat them raw. It was very tasty, and I decided I need to cook some soon! Micah’s class also got to take a trip to the Agricultural Fair, and they were there when we were. I loved watching them, and the Windermere Students, look at the goats and sheep. I think goats and sheep are so funny! The afternoon was great, and we concluded it with a good lunch before returning to campus.

This week we took the kids to the Leon Levy Plant Reserve, which is a new national park here. It’s so nice! They have ponds, a waterfall, and great trails, and even a tower on a high hill that you can climb. Micah came with us, which was fun, and Melisa Yates got to join us too!

We also got to learn more about bush medicine, and the many plants Eleuthera has to offer. They had a demonstration on how to make a broom from a palm branch, and each of the kids got to make their own too. I can’t wait to go there one day with Ryan and Micah and spend the day and have a picnic!

The field trips have been a great opportunity to get to know the kids outside of the normal school setting. It’s also been fun to watch them learn more about God’s creation and how He made nature for us to use and enjoy! I have had a lot of fun getting to spend more time with these kids! I’m so thankful that God lets us invest our lives here at Windermere
