Dad’s Visit

It was because of Easter Sunday that the whole team from Our Saviours couldn’t come to the island together, but that didn’t stop Dad from coming a few days early. Mom had responsibilities at church for Easter and Dad decided to come to Eleuthera and celebrate the holiday with Micah!

We had a great time with him. The island is notorious for having even simple tasks take all day to get completed, however with Dad here it was like the chores just fell off the list.

The team from OSL was scheduled to demolish our existing shed, which the hurricane severely damaged and then to pour the new foundation for the new shed. Step #1 in the plan was going to be to move all the existing tools and materials in the old shed into temporary storage. But this is a tedious task.

During the first few day while Dad was here, Emily and I still had some classes, as school was still in session. So, while we taught, Dad moved the entire shed item by item. You really can’t begin to describe the scope of moving everything single handedly, other than to say I’m glad I wasn’t doing it.

But little by little everything got moved, and my dad has worked in carpentry all his life, so more than just moving everything, it all got organized as well. The trouble was much of what was moved was old and worn out tools and equipment, had my dad had things his way, he would have thrown out a bunch of stuff. In fact he found over 2 dozen drills (many of which no longer work)… but when you’re on an island, you never throw anything away.

The shed was the triumph of Dad’s visit here, but the favorite parts had to have been spending time with Micah. “Papa” and Micah had so much fun together, and Emily and me are very thankful for one night in particular, Dad gave us his credit card to go out to eat and he stayed home to watch the boy – what a treat!

Whether it was accomplishing more than what we thought possible, or spending time with Micah, or helping fix the many to-do’s around the house like the vacuum, the water pump, the water heater, the list goes on and on… we are so thankful that Dad could take the time to come early. Unfortunately, he had to leave early this morning, and we still have the rest of the team here, but its not the same – thanks for coming – thanks for everything dad!
