Fourth of July 2012

Is perhaps a bit awaked to celebrate your country’s independence day in another country, but all the Bahamian we know wish us a happy 4th, and it just so happens that the Bahamian Independence Day is only a week away.

With out much for fireworks or, well… Americans for that matter – we have our own party. Michelle Pinder is one of the few Americans we know over here on Eleuthera so we invited her and her husband along with our neighbors over for a traditional American cookout and fireworks.

Emily is really mostly to blame for whatever success the party ends up being, she just thinks up the best little details that I always forget: like festive dishware and napkins, the American flag (come on Ryan), and dressing in red, white and blue. She even made a special trip to a far away grocery store just to buy sparklers! And she had Micah paint a special homemade flag with finger-paints – she’s so fun.

My main contribution is grilling out, which I love. We kept is simply for this small party, just burgers (and Emily bought those little buns at the store, so we could each eat like 3 burgers).

We had a great time with Harry, Michelle, and Dale and Lisette. Lisette brought some homemade banana pudding (awesome) and Michelle spent the day with Emily shopping and cooking and making this super tasty cheese cake.

As we were filling our bellies with feel-good-food, Dale asked me to recount the story of the founding of America. Now I love history, but its been a while… yet I’m happy to say my high school history teacher would have been proud. From the Mayflower and Pilgrims and Mass Bay Colony, to George Washington and the Continental Congress and the signing of the Declaration of Independence it was history brought to life… well as much as I can remember! (I’m pretty sure people were falling asleep)

Dale has us sing the National Anthem (which I just realized is all/only about the flag!?), and then it was time for pop rocks and sparklers. And Micah rode his bike round and round and round as we fellowshipped. Happy 4th of July everyone.

May God continue to bless America.
