5th and 6th Grade – by Emily

I just love teaching my kids in school! I love the younger ones as they are still somewhat innocent. I also love their energy! This year I get the privilege of teaching the 5th and 6th grade for most of their subjects. There are only 6 students, one being a Hatian boy who is older, but is in our class to learn English. The smaller class allows for many “teachable moments” as if it were a family. They have arguments and races like brothers and sisters, and we are getting to work through things according to what the Bible says. I have a goal to have them love one another and encourage one another, and have them realize their need for each other. I need lots of prayer! There is so much more to teaching school than just book work for sure!

In Religious Knowledge we started out the year learning about Adam and Eve, Heaven, and the Life of Christ. When we were learning about satan a tarantula crawled into our classroom! It was a funny day, but I have to say that we never got back to the lesson that day. I think it may have been the devil trying to distract us from learning……but we have had plenty of good discussions. The kids have so many questions!! I love that about them! My favorite moment in school so far is when I read the story of the crucifixion of Christ and one of the boys in my class started crying. That is what I want, for the gospel to hit their hearts and change them!

Along with the Bible, I get to teach them all the normal school things. It’s a challenge with all of them coming from different schools and all on different levels. I am working to bring them all to the same level, and it is a big task!
I need lots of prayer daily in teaching. It is a huge privilege to be able to teach at a Christian school. I know that what the kids learn here may be the only chance they get to hear about the Bible. My biggest challenge is getting the Hatian boy in my class to understand everything. I need to learn Creol! It’s so fun though to see him understand things for the first time in English!

I want to say a “thank you” to my sister-in-law, Katiera, my Aunt Susan and Uncle Mike, and my Aunt Barbara, who helped in providing posters and lots of decorations for my room this year. It looks great! My neighbor even made us curtains! Thank you! I love having a colorful friendly room where my kids can learn!
