Happy Trick or Treat

This year we traveled the long road to Spanish Wells with our friends the Yates and Micah and Isaac had the best time together. This was their first time not only for halloween in the Bahamas, but their first trip to Spanish Wells.

We love going to Spanish Wells but especially at Halloween because the community is so close knit that it is a very safe and fun place to spend as a family trick or treating… or as Micah calls it “Happy-Trick-or-Treat!”

Along with some candy (and by some, I mean an entire pillowcase full), we got to reconnect with some good friends who live there on the island, and we’re just so blessed with all the relationships we’ve been given. Micah is a pretty energetic boy and he’s well known on the island, its fun to have everyone notice how big he’s grown each time we visit.

This year, because there was a Peter Pan adventure on television, Micah wanted to dress up like Peter Pan. He would make the crowing sound A-roo, A-roo, A-roo for months waiting to pretend to be Peter Pan. Emily wins the mother of the year award again for her home-made craftswomanship of Micah’s costume.

Isaac was a football player, which was incredibly cute. We stopped on the dock and Ryan (Isaac’s dad) told him to pose and smile and he totally did the Heisman pose unrehearsed, it was fantastic!

When I was a child, Halloween was a fun time to dress up and pretend, but it was always covered by family time. I never much liked the scary part of the holiday, nor dressing up to scare or be scared… never made much sense. When my sister and I grew older we decided that we’d rather create a new tradition on Halloween and each Oct 31st our whole family would go to the bowling alley and it was a great time. We feel the same with Micah, as long as we can go as a family and his costumes remain a fun way to dress up and pretend we’ll keep going, but when he gets older we’ll probably look to a different family tradition. Unfortunately the years when little boys remain little boys is numbered and we want to take advantage of as much of it as we can. This year it was a treat to spend the experience with Ryan and Melissa.

But its also easy to feel like the ride home is the best. Both of the boys fell sound asleep as soon as the van hit the road, they were exhausted from running up to door after door – “Happy Trick or Treat!”
