Timothy Gibson Memorial Program and Choir

There is a novelty in serving in a country that is so young in its independence. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of their founders from the beginning of the Bahamian administration and even serving with some of them in church. One such novelty is knowing the family members of Bahamian, Timothy Gibson, who along with hailing from Savannah Sound, is also the writer of the country’s national anthem.

The local government asked our Principal Ms. Gibson to put together a memorial presentation along with participation from the Ministry of Education and all local schools to honor the life and legacy of Timothy Gibson. Along with the national anthem, Mr. Gibson was a author of many cherished Bahamian songs.

Each local school would be presenting a selection for the memorial service and we chose the song “One Bahamas.” For weeks Aaron had the children rehearsing the song and memorizing the words, and learning the tune. Then the week before the presentation, we began rehearsing as a school. Now not everyone at Windermere is a soloist, or even finds success in carrying a tune, but we worked with them, and by the end of all the practicing, we had a half-way decent choir.

For the actual ceremony, our whole school stood on the podium and resounded all 4 verses before the watching crowd. Despite getting rained on for about an hour, the program was a huge success. It is quite a challenge to get all the students to participate and cooperate together for a song, but all the hard work paid off, and in true Bahamian form the students performed very well; a rendition the Timothy Gibson would be proud of!
