Micah’s Trip to the North Woods

Being back in the US offers us the rare chance to visit our home back in Wisconsin. Even though we needed to assure the welcoming of baby sister into the world, we still made plans to travel back to Wisconsin if everything was going well for her and mom.

So two weeks after Sadie arrived, Micah and I left for the north woods. We met up with Meme and Papa before the lower Michigan bridge and then made our way back to mosquito and wood tick land (Emily’s #1 reason for not coming).

Micah had the best time with all the adventure from home, and the grandparents made the trip filled with fun. Both Papa and I were completely worn out with all the playing that Micah and Meme did. They did Jedi Knight training and fought battles against all the imaginary foes a 6 year old mind could conjure.

We wanted to get Micah a junior bike to ride around in the yard, so we looked all over and finally settled on Goodwill for a used one. Unfortunately, the only one they had was a girl’s bike, but we took it anyways, and after Papa fixed the tires and I spray painted it a lovely brown, Micah never knew the difference as he sped all around up and down the driveway.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was riding the new 4-wheeler. Growing up we never had an ATV, so I was living out my childhood dreams, and trying not to tear up the grass. Micah absolutely loved it, and although its against safety warning, he rode with me slowly up front steering the wheels with dad watching carefully behind.

Micah’s favorite part of the trip had to be the fishing. We went out on a backwater that was new to me, and Papa put us on a hot spot for Walleye. While Papa served as guide for Meme and my jigs, Micah sported a leech on a bobber, and before long that bobber was disappearing below the waters. Soon, Micah had the first Walleye… then the 2nd… then the 3rd. We couldn’t believe it, but he was the only one who hauled in the “keepers” that soon became our fish fry the following day. Micah kept on saying “aren’t you glad I caught these fish just to feed you!”

We had the best time back home. We spent time as far away from civilization listening to the birds and admiring the wild flowers. In the few days back home, I believe I finally reached my full recharge from the year’s expenditure of energy. I thank God for the oasis back north and pray He continues to fuel us for the work of ministry on the island.
