Thanksgiving, and our biggest little blessing, Micah – by Emily

I love Thanksgiving! This year was another great one! This year Micah has been memorizing the verse “Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever.” I have loved talking through being thankful with Micah and watching him actually being thankful!

A couple months ago Micah asked me if we can have a carnival where his friends can come and play games. I thought that Thanksgiving would be a great time since we would have a bunch of people coming anyways. Why not a little more chaos right? Micah and I spent a few weeks making carnival games every night. My goal was to not spend any money, but to use things we already have. I did however buy beans for the bean bags. I think that’s pretty good though! We made a ring toss, a can throw, a bean bag toss, and lollipop pull, a guess-how-many-candy-corn game, and we had a scavenger hunt which ended with clues that put together made our verse, Psalm 136:1, and then the event concluded with a game where the kids had to eat a donut hanging on a string without using their hands. We even had a photo booth for silly pictures!

Everyone had a great time, and I was so proud of Micah for having the idea and putting the whole thing together. A few days before Thanksgiving he started to get sick, and when I told him that we wouldn’t be able to have the carnival if he was sick he said “but mommy at least all my friends can have fun even if I can’t.” He made me a super proud mommy. He just wanted all his friends to have fun.

After the carnival we had our annual Thanksgiving Dinner. I had been cooking and baking for days and planning for weeks, and it all turned out great! I cooked two turkeys and five pies this year because we had 20 people! Along with all the food I made our friends brought even more food! Our house was FULL! We even moved out all our furniture to fit the tables and chairs (by “we” I mean my wonderful husband who was SUPER helpful!!!!) I was reminded of how blessed we are here at Windermere. God has given us an awesome staff that keeps growing and growing! It’s such a blessing to have the friends we do here!

My favorite part of the night was when Micah came up to me and said he had something to say to everyone. Of course, thinking I knew my son pretty well, I wondered what he would say. I have to admit that I was a little nervous. But to my amazement, he was like a SUPER great MC!!!! He thanked everyone for being there, and invited everyone to share what they are thankful for. He was so grown up! I was just so proud! I wish I had been filming it! It was one of those moments where I thought “wow, I must being doing something right! Closely followed by, “who am I kidding? I can take no credit for him, God has made him the boy he has grown to be!”

I’m so thankful that the Lord continues to shape him and mold him into such an amazing little boy! He’s a great little leader and teacher for sure! And I just love his heart! He prayed for Sadie the other day and said “God, please help Sadie to grow to be a kind and sweet little girl, and prepare her for the struggles she will face in her school work some day.” Apparently he had been having trouble with his school work that day! He is a great big brother!!!!!

He learned to hold Sadie a few weeks ago and is so proud that he can hold her! And he’s super helpful with everything with her! He is learning to be a servant too, and that a true leader is a servant first. He loves to set the table and get people drinks when they are at our house, and he even mopped the floor after our Thanksgiving meal. God has given us such a great little boy! I love watching the Lord work in his life!

We missed being with our family again this year. It was nice though to be able to cook while I watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. And the Bahamas was even in the parade this year! I got to dance with Sadie while we watched the Rocketts in the parade, and I got to call home and talk to my family. I’m thankful to have the technology to talk to family even when we can’t be there, and at least know that we can have a little bit of America on Thanksgiving!
