Mens Club

I have seen a unyielding desire in the hearts of our young men here at Windermere to truly embrace the role and responsibilities of what it means to be a Godly man. The tension is that culture rarely provides the correct perspective on what manhood ought to look like. Too many young men see manhood defined by toughness and self-preservation, such that you see those carrying around brown bottles and giving a false impression of no-fear by showing disrespect to authority as the quote “real-men.” Using harsh language and making sure that you get your way, are the hallmarks of cultural toughness and power. (notice the image of young man with the inappropriate t-shirt, worn to school)

This is the second year that I’ve led my Tuesday activity under the heading of “Men’s Club.” The goal is to provide situations for 6 young men where I can show them a Biblical definition of what God created man to be. Our weekly activities follow along themes such as, protector, provider, leadership, teamwork, humility, honesty, integrity, and the like. I find opportunities to integrate these lessons in to tasks that every man ought to know how to do, like tame fire, grill raw meat, use a chainsaw, open doors for others, change a propane tank, work as team, change the oil on your car, etc.

The boys I have this year are younger than last year, but they are are still responding well to our time for the most part. I find that it is a privilege to introduce them to so many various tasks that they’ve not been exposed to yet, with the expectation that they need to live like real men. Please pray that God will speak to them through these weekly sessions such that they will recognize the privilege God has entrusted to them to live as Godly young men and serve as positive change within their own cultural expectations.
