Windermere High School

It was a delight to be welcomed back to WHS on our visit. This was my first time getting to meet the new administration since the school has made major changes in personnel. Without being a familiar face to the new staff, I could see the professionalism on the new principal’s face while we were being introduced. However, as soon as he heard we were “the Flunkers,” a big smile swept across his face and the mood instantly lightened as he shook my hand saying, “Boy, I’ve heard so many good things about you!”

I was honored that immediately upon our arrival, Principal Limerick reintroduced us to the school and I was given the opportunity to address the student body. I recognized so many of them from last year’s Spiritual Emphasis, and briefly challenged them to “Make good decisions for the Lord.”

Since Ms. Gibson’s retirement and other subsequent terminations the school’s enrollment has increased and the financial health continues to improve. I got to sit for a couple of hours and speak with some of the staff about the current and on-going challenges, and some exciting changes to the board to increase cooperation with the local community. Repeatedly the resounding sentiment is that God’s timing is not ours but His faithfulness in His timing is perfect.

The staff invited me to speak the next week in their Wednesday chapel (this was originally my first ministry with the school back in 2008). I was impressed with the student’s attention and attitude, and it wasn’t long before I recalled their attentiveness from last year’s Spiritual Emphasis Week. My challenge to them was to choose to follow Jesus at a young age and how whether you realize it or not, everyone serves somebody.

After chapel, Micah and I put on our work clothes and from 9am till 5pm, we worked on a list of projects and repairs. From major fixes to the schools cabling, to the routine gutters and door knobs, we had a great time helping to keep the school patched up and running smooth. Of course the majority of our fixes were glorified bandaids – major restoration has always been a need, but last year we fixed the gates, and they were still standing tall this year!

We were blessed to serve the school during our time back on the island. With some significant staffing changes and additions the students have responded with optimism and a sincere positive attitude. We pray for God’s continued blessing on the mission and ministry on the hill.
