Ministry to the Youth

One of the privileges I get while back in Spanish Wells is to partner with the church’s Youth Pastor Travis Newbold and speak to the students at their weekly youth group on Friday nights. In addition to the Methodist Church, I was also invited to speak to the youth gathering for the Gospel Chapel at the house of one of their elders, and also attended their youth meetings on Mondays. Although I’m not as fluent in youth ministry, I am convinced one subject that ought to be taught to our youth today is Apologetics.

So in effort to equip them to face a world of questions and skeptics we spent 3 nights overviewing the different categories within Apologetics and trying to build a few of the arguments into their own personal defense for God’s existence and the trustworthiness of the scriptures.

I was actually surprised how many of the students were interested in the subject. Our numbers systematically grew each week and by the end of it, I’d say the majority had all the major subjects memorized.

This world’s challenge is that sin and wickedness has caused most to suppress the knowledge of their Creator because they love their sin more than they love God. However, the way we communicate the Hope for mankind is sometimes just as important as the message itself.

At the Gospel Chapel, they had one student who at 17 years old has felt God’s call to publicly stand up and witness to his fellow peers. This young man gave a sermon to the students and challenged them about their thoughts in regards to judging others. In same way that this young man pursued a message that was relevant to his listeners, we must carefully convey the message of grace with the same intentionality, always being prepared to give a defense for the hope that we have in Christ.
