12.27.09 – A Winter Frosting

While we were at the Flunker Farm, I woke up one morning to notice that Jack Frost had put a winter-wonderland snow dusting on everything. The sun was just rising, and I quickly grabbed my camera and without boots I trudged the icy landscape to take pictures of one of the most amazing sunrises I’ve ever seen.

The pictures are from our family farm where my Grandma lives. A few years ago the state decided to build a highway right through the middle of the farm, and ever since it seems pictures are all that remains of the tranquil vista of the family property.

This is one reason why these pictures are special.

The sun was rising quickly, but even in my Bahamian ankle socks with snow packed shoes I felt like I could shoot pictures for hours – the way the sun was sparkling off of those crisp flakes was absolutely amazing. It was like nature was just begging to be photographed, and I couldn’t press the shutter fast enough.

After the sun rose into the clouds I went back in the house to stand over the heater vent, but just 30 minutes later my dad and I took the tractor across to the other side of the new highway to photograph the other side of the farm.

It was a morning where the crisp winter air was still, and brittle branches glistened in a bath of morning sun.

This was the exact moment I hoped for during our trip back home; a chance to see the beauty of home and the changing face of the seasons.

If the sun hadn’t rose, I’d still be crouching with my camera to this moment, trying to frame up that next snow flake so its light would sparkle.
