Each holiday season, Emily and I split up our time between both our families. Traditionally, the 25th has been at the Flunkers, and New Years is at the Pfeisters. Both families have a tree-load of presents to open, so that means double “Christmas Morning” each year.
This first day of 2010 we all gathered with the Pfeister Family and the tree turned into a mound of colorful wrapping paper, tinsel sparkled treasures and heaps of presents begging our 4 youngsters to open.
This year part of the extended family couldn’t make it, so we video chatted our 2nd Christmas Morning with them… amazing what we can do with technology. Maybe we’ll be doing that in the future from the Bahamas! (not sure you can video chat snow appropriately).
As we have experienced with each “unwrapping” the true gifts of the season are the time with family. When we only get one chance a year to hug and laugh together we are reminded about how important it is to make the time and effort to reconnect. It is enriching to our souls.
Micah is still learning how to share… we need to work on that, but he is definitely “saucer-eyed” when it comes to all the gifts. He can barely finish opening one without reaching for the next. Emily and my favorite part is simply watching him enjoy the experience and we look forward to cultivating in him an understanding of the true reason for Christmas and The Gift that was once given for all.
Whether it is cheering on college football games or sharing a glass of nog we have thoroughly enjoyed our time with family. So we leave 2009 with a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
