Easter 2011

Easter is the pinnacle of the Christian calendar and my favorite holiday. Ever since childhood, Easter was always a special time. My parents would always lead us to church and celebrate the resurrection at home with Easter egg hunts, Easter baskets and all the colorful traditions that this wondrous day brings.

This year we had fun with the Newton’s kids painting and search for eggs. Micah, Nicholas, and Haley dyed their fingernails green, blue, and red, dipping eggs into the transformative liquid (with parental supervision, ever so carefully, mind you).

Then we had Easter baskets hid all around the house, which upon finding revealed chocolately treats wrapped in blue and goldleaf foil. There were toys and squirt guns, balls and baskets. It was so much fun to watch.

Once the sugar started to flow, the kids stripped down and fired up the sprinkler and had (what seemed like) hours of fun running and splashing in the mud.

Easter services at the church were special as well, and I’m continually awe struck at the historical reality of the empty tomb.

Recently Isaiah 53 has been speaking to me. It is humbling and devastating to read the love of the Father to give us the Son and place our punishment upon He who didn’t deserve it. Amazingly, the resurrection shows up even in Isaiah, “He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days,” 53:10.

What a marvelous gift we’ve been given to carry around this treasure, that Christ died for our sins, and that he was buried and rose again, 1 Co 15:3-4. Easter is more than simply eggs and bunnies, it more than messages on success and breaking bond… it is LIFE, He is Life, He is ALIVE.
